This has several causes, unfortunately. Usually, these things together can be caused by overwatering and not enough sunlight. They do not like wet soils, and need a complete dry-out between waterings. This could explain the the lack of leaves from falling off. A lack of sunlight would show by the plants getting leggy. Luckily, they will replace themselves once cut. It will be necessary to provide good growing conditions to help it to recover, though.
