Q.repairing young trees with cat scratch damage

Zone Hollister, Ca 95023 | Gerry Wright added on May 13, 2014 | Answered

How do we repair two young trees that a cat has scratched all the way around? The trees have been planted for 3 weeks and yesterday we discovered that something has scratched all the way around each one below the branches. My husband wrapped the small trunk in a damp towel and taped it around the damaged area and then put a hard plastic cover around it.

This article will give you some facts about repairing tree bark: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/tgen/repairing-tree-bark-damage.htm
This article talks about protecting plants from dogs, but I think the info is also aplicable to cats: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/pests/animals/keep-dog-out-of-garden.htm
In addition, if you wrap the trunk loosely with chicken wire, that should keep the cat from scratching.
