Q.Found Something On Top Of The Soil In A Flower Bed

Zone St Louis, Mo | sb28wannab added on June 14, 2020 | Answered

I live outside St Louis, Mo. I’m watering my flower bed and I see what looks like a large rock in the soil. When I water it it changes to brown powder. A lot of it and it doesn’t mix with water. It rises like brown smoke. Then it changes back to looking like a rock only bright yellow. When I nudge it with my shoe it breaks and looks like strong yellow paper. It was freaky. Any idea what it is?

Unfortunately, your photo did not come through. I am unable to identify the issue. It sounds like some fungal fruiting body. That may be a good place to start.
