What is wrong with a bird of paradise plant when the stalks turn brown? It has had 2 blooms on it earlier this year.

If this is a new planting, it's important to reduce stress to the plant with proper watering and a well draining soil site.
Full sun can scorch the plant.
Aphids and crown borers can harm the plant. Keep the dead foliage removed from the base of the plant and 'wash' the plant with a spray of water to remove pests.
