Q.asparagus

Anonymous added on September 12, 2015 | Answered

I recently planted 2 year old asparagus crowns. The ferns are about 3 feet tall. How do I prepare the asparagus for the winter? Do I cut down the ferns? Do I let the ferns grow until next year? What is the procedure?

This growth is normally cut back in the fall. This article will help with cutting the foliage back: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/asparagus/cutting-asparagus-foliage-back-in-autumn.htm

We would recommend adding a layer of leaves or mulch over them for this first winter to help protect them a little more but other than that, they should be fine.
