How do I get rid of the fungus eating my red tip photinia? Some leaves have holes and there are some purple leaves. I was told to mix dishwashing liquid with water and spray entire plant. Is there more I can do?
Neem oil may also be effective, both as an organic fungicide and pesticide. These articles should help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/photinia/photinia-leaf-spot.htm, https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/problems/pests/neem-oil-uses.htm
Our plants are about 2 years old. They are well ventilated. The red tips are turning to a pink color and I'm not sure if this is a problem or not. They are watered from a drip line only and I pruned as directed. Can you offer any help?
Paling of the leaf color might be caused by nutrient deficiency. This article has some pointers: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/photinia/red-tip-photinia-fertilizer.htm
What is the best fertilizer for red tip photinia? What is the best fertilizer for weigela?
For red tip photinias, feed them a balanced fertilizer and one that is aimed at acid-loving plants. An even fertilizer like 8-8-8 would be good. Fertilize once in spring and once in early fall. For the weigela, only an annual feeding is necessary. Give the shrub a regular, balanced plant food in late winter/early spring to promote more blooms.
My photinia is close to 18 feet tall and is planted in xeriscape. It has been losing a lot of leaves lately since blooming this spring. Living in NV, our temps get very high in the summer. When do I fertilize, how much water with a drip system and how often to water? How often do you prune and when? The bark on the tree is getting all wrinkled and weathered looking. Do I have a disease in the tree and, if so, what do I do to fix the problem? Thank you for any help.
It is really hard to say exactly how much water you need to give them in order to be watered enough, due to the fact that many factors can influence this. I will say that it does sound like the plant is under watered. This would cause almost all of the symptoms you describe. So increase water to the plant and, as the heat increases, continue to increase the water. As for fertilizer, how often will depend on the product you use for how often you apply it. This should be on the directions on the fertilizer you buy. But, in general, a water soluble fertilizer is applied once every 2-4 weeks and a slow release fertilizer will be every 3 months. Pruning should be done when the plant is dormant (i.e. winter). This article will help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/photinia/pruning-photinia-shrubs.htm
Need a fertilizer for my photinias.
Feed it with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer (8-8-8) and one that is aimed at acid-loving plants. Fertilize once in spring and once in early fall.
How can I take cuttings of Photinia Red Robin? I have already taken the tips of branches, 3 leaves down, put them in vase of water but after 3 weeks there are no roots appearing. What should I do?
If the water doesn't work, you may need to start again with fresh cuttings and place them directly in soil.
