The vine is 30years old, we have pruned back one third of it .What is left looks very heathy.

No. please do not do that. It is not meant for plants in any way, and will leave your soil and plant toxic, and/or dead.

There are many pest control methods that are very safe, and non-toxic. My general rule is this: If you wouldn't eat it or drink it, then neither will plants or any other life for that matter.

There are many other ways to control pests that will be much better, cheaper, safer, and more effective.
