Q.Why My Calla Lily Flowers Darkening And Closing

Zone Los Angeles 90018 | Paxvobiscum29 added on June 10, 2020 | Answered

I transplanted them into the ground a month ago after purchase at a store. The last 2 weeks They started curling down. Stems are still firm. Leaves still lush green. Flower color originally was purple but now have darkened to be green on outer side And also closed up. Leaves are starting to curl down words too. The plant gets partial sun usually in the evenings. I watered every other day before but now daily since tempuatures are really hot now. Can they be saved??

I notice that the soil is heavy clay, very saturated, and quite compact. The plant is showing signs of root suffocation, and clay soils can take a few weeks to dry down to an acceptable depth to water again, which will be about 2 or 3 inches for this plant.

They won't do well in this spot unless you amend the soil with quite a bit of organic material.
