They are not quite hardy in your area. If it gets down any lower than 10 degrees, the whole thing will die. It will be best to grow these in container, so that you can bring it inside during the winter.
As for turning brown... This sounds like a fungal infection. This usually happens from being too wet for too long. Next time that you water, you can replace 1/4 of that with peroxide, just once, and that will clear things up.
