Q.Why is my walnut tree producing what looks like seed pods

Zone Pasco Wa. 99301 | BB added on May 1, 2014 | Answered

We have two walnut trees placed about 30 ft apart. One has leafed normal this spring and the other has produced these seed pod looking things in place of leaves. There are a few leaves but they are small.

This sounds like one of several possible diseases that affect walnuts in the Pacific Northwest, especially after a difficult winter. Please take samples of the affected tree to a local Extension Service office for analysis and possible treatment.
