Q.Why Edges Of My Rose Look Black And Wilted?

Velox added on June 1, 2020 | Answered

I’m new to gardening and I have some some rose bushes, I already have one beautiful and big rose but the edges of the rose petals look ‘wilted’ kind of? And have completely black spots why is that? Here are some photos that kind of show that.

The darkened edges of rose petals can be caused by some different things. In many cases the darkened spots occur only on the rosebuds original Guard Petals. The guard petals are what protect the developing rose bloom as it develops and gets ready to open. Those guard petals take alot of abuse from temperature changes to various spray drift issues to insect attacks. So seeing the guard petals look bad is kind of expected. When it gets extremely hot out, even though the rosebush is well watered,it just simply cannot move enough moisture out to the far edges of the bloom petals to stop them from burning. Thus black edges that turn a crispy brown eventually. Once the temps cool later in the season, the black sunburned edges should stop happening. The blackened spots and edges on the petals can be due to improper mixing of pesticides that are applied to the rosebushes. Be sure to read the label on any product sprayed on your rosebushes and mix it per the instructions, mixing the application a bit stronger can burn foliage and blooms. Also watering the rosebushes and plants the night before the application of any pesticides to the rosebushes is very highly recommended. A well hydrated rosebush is far less likely to have a bad reaction to a spray than a dry and thirsty one.
