Q.Why Aren’t My Tall Lilies Growing?

My sister bought me four of the really tall Lilly bulbs about 4 years ago and I have them in a tall planter because they grow so high. Hers are fantastic and begin growing at the start of May. They are beautiful every year but mine are a long time growing and this year are only about 18” high with a tiny bud. I cover them in winter and feed them just the same as she does. What am I doing wrong. Last year they were lovely but no where near as tall or beautiful as hers?

I suspect the container. It is very tall and if it is filled with soil the whole way, it needs to be very well draining. That means lots of perlite or sand should be added. Also, does it have drainage holes at the bottom? If not, that can cause problems, too.

Also, lilies are heavy feeders and need a slow release fertilizer added each spring. Here is more:
