Q.When and How to Trim Pussy Willow Tree
I am confused by the article because when I am reading about the tree, I suddenly find that they are talking about the bush. The article starts with when to prune the tree:
“The first thing to learn when learning how to cut pussy willow trees is when to do it. The best time when to prune a pussy willow tree is actually when the catkins are on the tree. This will ensure that you trim the plant before it has started active growth but you will also not inadvertently eliminate the young branches that the catkins grow on. ”
Does this mean that I should cut the branches that my wife wants? The tree is overgrown and I need to cut more than the branches with the catkins.

It is a tree, though it is sometimes referred to as a shrub/bush. The article also states: “Using coppice pruning means that you will severely cut the pussy willow back. The best time when to prune a pussy willow tree this way is right after the catkins start to fade. Trim the pussy willow down to 6 to 12 inches from the ground.” Simply put, wait until the catkins have done their thing and go ahead and prune the heck out of it—all branches, all the way to about a foot from the ground. Don’t worry, this tree will come back and flourish.
