Q.What Vegetable, Flower or Herb Grow in Sandy Soil?

Zone 5 | Bowferd added on April 22, 2012 | Answered

I live in a rural area and constructed a large quonset style building for my home and shop. When pouring the cement for footings, we had a load of sand brought in and where the pile sat is now going to make up about 20% of my herb and vegetable garden. The sand has permeated the soil in this area and I was wondering what would be best to plant there. This area was previously growing native grass and alfafa.

Not many plants, especially vegetables, grow well in sandy soil and should therefore be amended to make it more nutrient rich. This article will help with that: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/garden-how-to/soil-fertilizers/amending-sandy-soil.htm
