Zone 90290 | Anonymous added on October 16, 2022 | Answered

Old eucalyptus tree has a hole and had these beautiful mushrooms growing. Do you know what it is and do you think this could be saved (even though I took it down because it was in a high fire zone) what disease could it be and is this a tree disease or dirt disease? Can I plant any tree in its place? Thank you Photos: Mushrooms My whole arm going into the bottom of trunk Crack in trunk filed with white substance (dry and hard)

Unfortunately, your photos did not come through. I am unable to see the mushroom in question. Some tree-borne mushrooms are pathogenic, while others are benign. Without know which, I can't say for certain whether it is a threat to your tree, or others planted in its place.

Generally, if the mushroom is a tree pathogen that is making the tree sick or has killed it, then it will be unwise to plant something in its place, unless you know the mushroom species and what tree species it infects.
