What Tool Will Cut Bird of Paradise Leaves?

I have 5 bird of paradise plants that have not been pruned in years. The plant does not look its best but still blooms profusely. I’ve tried all types of pruning shears, saws, even a machette. What can I use to cut these tough stems?
