Q.What to plant now
What edible plants could I plant now in the Northeast with success? I’m a bit late in the game (i. e. herbs or vegetables?). Pumpkin, squashes? Any possibility of tomatoes?

You're not too late for toms if you get plant from a garden centre. Also july is the time for beans, main crop carrots and, beetroot.
