Q.What Is This On My Veggie Plant

I pulled the plant up and it had some kind of liquid that was red coming out of it and what looked like black sludge

This is a slime mold! It is unsightly, but it is doing its best to save your plant from some nasty bacteria in the soil. The slime molds will eat these bacteria.
