Q.What Is This On My Crassula Ovata?

Seemed to appear over night. Very small oval black…almost seed shaped. They are flat and when I pulled them out(yes I pulled the all out for fear of bugs) …. it was brittle with nothing inside. Yet they were attached to the leaf and hard to remove. Damaged the leaf when removed. Pic attached.

It could be the shells of scale insects. There still could be hard-to-see juveniles or eggs on board so I would treat the plant for scale. Here is how:
