What Is The Cause Of This Shrub Demise?

I have these on both sides of my front entry. The ones on the right are fine. The left, not so much. I have replaced the left because they failed, now the new ones are dying. Any suggestions on the cause or suggest a different shrub? Full sun area code 75703.

You may want to get the soil tested; there may be something amiss. It is possible the first shrubs had a disease that lingered in the soil, and now it has affected the second planting. Here is more information on replant disease:

Is that an abelia shrub or euonymus? Euonymus is often attacked by scale insects.

You could plant different but similar looking shrubs such as variegated boxwood or a small cultivar of variegated osmanthus.
