Q.What could be planted at the base of a new Wisteria (Amethyst Falls)?

Zone Ottawa Canada, zone 5a | Anonymous added on July 3, 2020 | Answered

Hello,
We just planted one of four Wisteria Amethyst Falls plants in an extra large hand made cement container (24″(L) x18″(H) x24″(D)) so we have three more to go. We would like to plant something at the base of the plants so that it provides a bit of shade there plus makes it prettier.
What would go well with this plant without taking too much root space and will look beautiful as a combination? Something that spills over the container would be ideal.
I included a photo.

I would just get an annual and then keep it mulched over winter. These vines are vigorous growers and probably don't need competition from other plants for nutrients.

I would add some million bells or petunias for the rest of the summer.
