What Causes Watermelons to Burst Open Before They Ripen

Before my crimson sweet watermelons get ripe, they crack open and burst. Why?

Uneven watering is normally the reason for this. Watermelons should be watered a few times a week, and more so in extreme heat. Adding mulch, like straw, is also an effective way to retain moisture.
