Q.What Can I Use To Discourage An Animal From Digging Up And Eating The Crocosmia Bulbs?

I got some Crocosmia bulbs to be planted which I did. There is an animal during the night that digs the bulbs up and eats them. What can I put down to discourage this animal? Can I sprinkle pepper on the ground or something else that will discourage it from digging up and nibbling the bulbs.

You can try cayenne or hotter, since black pepper will not be effective.
