What are the effects of location of water source on root growth?

Not sure exactly what you mean. Perhaps the difference between surface water and water in underground pipes? Or irrigation close to the trunk or stem as opposed to well beyond the drip line? A couple of thoughts...first, the specie of plant and how its roots grow are important; also, soil type is more important than location of water source; finally, how the water moves through the soil and if all the roots are moistened may be the most important of all.
