Q.Using fertilizer

Zone Shelton WA 98584 | Anonymous added on November 11, 2016 | Answered

I would like to know how long into fall and winter I can fertilize plants like garlic, shallots, chives, hellebores and have the fertilizer used by the plants. I would use Miracle Grow. Do you have a suggestion what to use in the fall and winter?

Fall is not the time to fertilize the plants as they are preparing for dormancy.
If you feel the soil needs something you can top dress with some organic material such as compost.
Your Hellebores also enjoy an organic rich soil. You can add Epsom Salts or a dressing of garden Limestone in spring.
Also the Hellebores can be fertilized in early spring with a light application of a granular balanced fertilizer.
