Q.USDA Zone Clarification

Zone Castle Rock, WA | Anonymous added on October 26, 2025 | Answered

Hi, I read an article by Amy Grant titled Avocado Tree Cuttings: Tips For Avocado Propagating By Cuttings April 3, 2021. It said that if you live in Zone 4-5, you can plant the avocado seedlings in the ground after 6 weeks or so. When I look up the USDA zone, Zone 4-5 is in the below freezing (4 is -30 to -20, 5 is -20 to -10). Was this listed in error? I know that avocados are tropical and need heat and humidity, like the ones grown in CA, which is zone 8-9. Please clarify.

Yes, I believe that is an error. Avocados are tropical to subtropical trees. I will forward your comment to the editor.
