Question

Can I just clear an area and press the seeds into the soil and let them overwinter? They need light to germinate as well as cold scarification. Will that do it? I’d rasther avoid the multistep indoor method. I live in east-central Ohio so cold is guaranteed.

Yes, you can. You do have to protect against birds eating the seeds, though. These articles should help:
