Q.the fronds break at their base on my christmas palms
the fronds are health and green but break where they attach to the tree pre maturely.then dry out and drop off.New fronds are growing but the plant gets too high.???? ed
The way that palms grow is that they elongate in height from a terminal bud at the top of the foliar crown. This will continually add height, and there is nothing you can do to change that growth habit. Christmas palm grows to about 20 - 25 feet in height.
Lower fronds at the bottom of the crown age and die. In the case of a Christmas palm they are "self-cleaning", meaning the older fronds separate from the trunk and fall off without being cut. This is natural.
If you think this is happening pre-maturely/excessively, then it could be due to poor growing conditions, water deficit (drought stress) and/or nutrient deficiency.
