Does the vine blossom the first year planted or do I just have to wait?
Trumpet vines take a few years to reach maturity and bloom, so sadly you'll just have to wait for now.

Thank you for your clear and very helpful article on trumpet vine pruning & cutting! Now that I've read it, I'm not sure how to proceed. The vine will be 1 year old in June. The wood you see in the attached picture (dated: Monday, Apr 17, 2017 @ 5:15 PM EDT in Oneida, NY) is the complete growth from last year (minus the 3-4 bamboo stakes :-) So, what should we do now, given we did not prune it last year? Any and all guidance is welcome and will be received with much gratitude. Most sincerely, Maggie Argentine.
Glad you found the article useful.
I think you have two options. You could select several strong, straight shoots that are growing now, and cut off the rest of the shoots at the base. Or, you could wait until fall and cut the whole plant back to 0-8 inches from the ground and essentially start again next spring, then proceed as if the plant is 2 years old instead of 3 next year. It does look like you have several good, strong shoots now, so going with the first option should work.
I cut my trumpet vine down in fall to about 10" and covered it with a 5 gallon pail..... uncovered in April after the weather was above 32.... I live in WI..... I think it's dead... no sign of life.... what did I do... kill it? Is there anything I can do now?
I'd recommend waiting to see if some sprouts grow from the root ball. Trumpet vines, if well established, are pretty tough, even when trimmed radically. The vine might still make it.
Why does our trumpet vines not bloom?
The most common reason is that the vine is not old enough, it can take 10 years for a vine to bloom.
This link will help you determine the cause.

I have two older trumpet vines. One is getting greenery and the other isn't showing any buds or signs of leafing out. Is it dead? They are in the same general area and have been for two or three years.
I agree that there seems to be no signs of life or growth in the 2nd vine.
Are the stems pliable when you bend them? Do they snap and break? Dead stems will break right off.
If the stems still bend, be patient and give the vine more time.

something is eating my trumpet vine leaves almost as fast as they grow. I think it's ants, but not sure. Can I use sevin dust on the vines to kill/deter the ants from them? They aren't blooming yet so the hummingbirds aren't too interested in it as of yet.
This article will help you.
