I have about 200 roses that are getting a virus or something. The bushes have very small leaves and the bloom is very small and now are turning down. I have sprayed with ortho products about every 10 days that is not stopping the problem. I have had roses for 30 years and never had this problem. It is spreading this rainy year and now has killed one rose. I have one or two good bushes in the same sick beds. I have been researching the web ad can't find anything that matches what these look like.any help would be appreciated.
Perhaps you could try a fungicide ( Physan 20) . Alternatively, it may be a good idea to remove the diseased plants before your entire collection is infected.
We've never grown roses from seed and find lots of conflicting advice. Could you give us a step by step to germinating with a time line we could anticipate?
Usually the rose seeds one gets from Japan and China, etc... Are fakes and come from folks trying to steal our money. Many are weed seeds, some other plant seeds or even wood pellets. If they are true rose seeds, please see this article: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/roses/growing-roses-from-seed.htm
Where can I buy the plastic rose collars for mounding my roses for the winter?
Most garden centers should carry these items.
You can try a search on the internet and you can find a source online that could ship to you directly.
Can you cut a rose back to the ground that gets black spot and transplant it to another spot? Hoping to get rid of the problem.
A series of spray applications of a fungicide called Mancozeb will usually stop black spot in its tracks. This article should help as well: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/roses/black-spot-roses.htm
I am trying to find small bare root roses that will ship in the fall. Can you give me a list of nurseries that sell them? I do not want the roses to be over 20 inches in height. Thank you.
I would suggest that you contact Weeks Roses to see what they recommend. Many of the on-line nurseries only ship in early spring. Perhaps check with Heirloom roses and see if they will do this.
I have planted a rose plant in pot and it was flowering quite well. Of lately, the new leaves come out wrinkled and the buds also don't blossom. Buds appear to be burnt as days pass by. Please suggest a remedy to cure this infection. Thanks in advance.
Thank you for the prompt response. I will try it out.
It is hard to say what is going on with your rosebush. It could be that some herbicide spray drifted over onto it. It could also be that the pot is a bit too small for the bush and thus the root zone is not happy. The worst thing would be if Rose Rosette Virus is starting to show its face. I would say try pruning it back, water well with some water that has both a product calle Super Thrive in it and 1/3 cup Epsom salts per gallon of water. This mix should be used the next couple of times the bush needs water. Also be very sure the pot is draining properly and water is not allowed to stand in the drain pan area.
I have black spot. Do I cut off the leaves before I spray or after? What is a good spray to get rid of it?
The best spray I have found to stop Black Spot in its tracks is called Mancozeb fungicide. It will leave a yellowish powdery residue upon the foliage but that is part of how it works. Spray the rosebushes affected with the black spot with this fungicide three to four times 7 to 10 days apart. The Mancozeb is avaialable from http://www.rosemania.com. After that you can use fungicides such as Honor Guard or Green Cure to keep it at bay. Once the fungus has been killed all new foliage coming out should be clear of the black spotting, if not, do the same spraying again. Once the black spot is on the foliage it will never go away. However you do not need to remove those leaves unless so desired. As the affected leaves will still function for the health of the rosebush until new ones take over.
