I don't like arborvitae, so I want to get a few of the reddish/green shrubs that grow for privacy but I can't remember the name.
I think you may be looking for red-tip photinia. Here is more information: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/photinia/growing-red-tip-photinia.htm
I'm not sure if this is what your looking for but there is a nadina 3 to 10ft and a photinia fraser also called red top 8 to 12ft , Both are hardy hope this helps.
When is the best time to prune red tips and can it be pruned to the ground?
Prune photinia sometime during early spring through early fall--late spring, early summer being the best time. Unruly plants can be cut back 6 inches to the ground and will come back--annual pruning will help keep them maintained and manageable. They can take a pretty severe pruning, so you can cut them back to a manageable size without harming them.
When do you prune red tips without killing them and how can you start new cuttings?
Prune your Red Tip Photinia anytime between spring and early fall, with late spring/early summer more acceptable. Red Tips are excellent candidates for rejuvenation pruning. To rejuvenate the plant, cut it all the way back to the ground...to about 6 inches from the ground.

I have large redtip photinias that are losing their leaves and dying. There is something on the ground around the trunks that resembles red sawdust. We have a number of these plants (10) and the others are doing well. The plants are trimmed and I could not find signs of the fungus on the leaves. What could this be? There looks to be some small bore holes along the trunk. Any suggestions?
It sounds like it has a borer of some kind. Flathead borers are the most common on this plant. This article will help: http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/GARDEN/PLANTS/INVERT/flatheaded.html
I am planting Red Tips along my fence line for privacy. I would like to keep as much yard space as possible. How close can I plant them to the fence? Any suggestion?
Generally, these shrubs require at least 6 feet spacing between plants and most foundation plantings require anywhere from 3-5 feet from the home. Therefore, I would say plant it somewhere within these guidelines. If you plan on keeping the shrub pruned, which would help maintain its larger size, then somewhere between the 3-5 feet from the fence should be adequate.
I live in Central Maryland (Zone 7). I have several red-tipped photina that need to be trimmed. What is the best time of the year to trim them?
Prune your Photinia anytime between spring and early fall, with late spring/early summer more acceptable. Red Tips are excellent candidates for rejuvenation pruning. To rejuvenate the plant, cut it all the way back to the ground...to about 6 inches from the ground. It should grow back nicely and you can expect to see 3 to 4 feet of new growth the very first year.
Is it too late in the year to plant red tips? I have mostly sandy soil and maybe a month of fair weather left here in south Texas.
If you have about a month of good weather left, that should be enough time for them to become established. If you get any kind of frost, mulch around the base of the plant for the winter just in case it did not fully establish. That will keep the plant safe from the cold.
