Q.Need past article written by Steve Bender

I hereby request an article by Mr Steve Bender published in the August, 1996, issue of Southern Living. He came to Gainesville, FL, for a photo shoot and interview with Alan & Ellen Shapiro, then owners of San Felasco Nurseries. The focus was the landscaping uses of ginger lilies. I am willing to pay for the article or the complete back issue. Thank you. I am a S.L. subscriber.

As long as the hydrogen peroxide is diluted, it should pose no harm. For fungal infections, you should do it once, then wait a week and do it again if it doesn't respond. Depending on the plant and type of fungal infection, there may be a need for a different treatment.

For bugs, you can spray the plant and the soil weekly till no more bugs.

This appears to be a fungal infection. Since it is in container, the cure is a little easier to manage. Just mix 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide per cup of water the next time you water. Do this once a week for 2 or 3 weeks, and then it should subside. This treatment will only need to be done when it shows signs of infection.

Make sure to only water once the soil is dry down to 2 or 3 inches if there are drainage holes. If there are not, consider repotting or adding drainage holes. Overwatering is the most common cause of plant disease, so it is necessary to be very certain to only water when necessary to ensure that this is prevented in the future.

Yes, you can leave it on as a mulch. If the grass was treated with pesticides, it's been long enough time that those have disintegrated.
