Hi, Thanks for your very useful articles. I grow several lime trees, and have a serious problem with the leaves turning yellow. They still produce flowers and fruit, but look terrible. I have tried sequestered iron, and now Epsom salts, as well as the usual citrus fertilisers, but no improvement. Any advice appreciated, Regards, Bill Ure (Portugal).
I would start with a soil test to determine if this is a nitrogen deficiency or other soil issue.

Can you get sick from the lime? If so what are the symptoms?

Your article about yellowing leaves on rhododendrons mentioned making the soil more acid by using lime. I had always thought lime neutralized acid, making soil alkaline. Which is correct? I add sulfur to both rhododendrons and blue endless summer hydrangea. PH seems good, but neither have bloomed for years. Maybe our -20F is killing buds. Do you have any suggestions? Our zip code is 13625.
Lime has been used for over 1000 years to change the soil ph, making it easier for plants to take up nutrients and minerals from the soil.
This is why it is referenced in the article on yellowing leaves.

Non blooming shrubs can be due to winter damage, improper pruning, pests, fungus, nutrition issues, excess nitrogen.
I would suggest a soil test to help you determine if soil amendments are needed.

My Philippine Lime tree was started from seeds of a prolifically bearing adult tree that produced hundreds of small (1") sweet limes each year. My tree (now 5+ years old) is beautiful and healthy but does not bear fruit. Is grafting necessary and if so, what type of citrus should be used? Thank you, Gloria Eive geive@silcon.com

Tree only leafed out at bottom, not on top although lims are green in middle, how do I bring it back?
If you mean that it leafed out at the base of the tree, unfortunately that means that the tree is likely unsalvageable.
All commercially sold citrus trees are grafted. This means that there is one type of tree that makes of the canopy of the tree, called the scion, and another one that makes up part of the trunk and all of the roots, called the rootstock. Occasionally the scion will die off and the rootstock will reassert itself by growing from the bottom of the tree. But rootstock never produces quality fruit.
If you think you have a situation where the scion has died and the rootstock is regrowing, it is best to replace the tree.
Here is more information that may help:

We've had this tree for about 7-8 years now and it has never growing fruit, just some pretty leafs. I've thought of tossing it but I know it's my fault that tree is not giving us any fruit. I don't know the exact name of the tree. I feed it every 6 weeks with Miracle grow for citrus and avocado trees, and water it regularly. It is also in a nice sun and partly shade area. I've also noticed this year that we get some yellow spots on the leafs. How often should I feed it and when to stop for harvesting time please help! Marjorie
