We just bought land with a quite a few lilac trees on it. But they have no smell. I love lilac's but would like them to have smell. What do I need do???? I plan on pruning them after they bloom. I grew up in a house that had old lilac trees in the yard and they always smelled great.
This article has some ideas why your Lilac's may be lacking fragrance.

I have an old dark purple French lilac that only has 2 to 3 blooms a year. I am planning to prune a little after blooms this spring and then fertilize in Feb. of '18. Bone meal will be a component. Does that sound right? This bush was my mother's. Her aunt gave it to her in the '50s.
Old lilacs will often not bloom or have very few blooms. Yes, adding bone meal and pruning to encourage new wood to grow is a good plan. You can follow one of the two pruning plans described in this article:

The plan should cause flowering to improve over the next 3-5 years.
I have had a mature lilac tree in my garden that blossomed white every year. However, this year it's blossoming purple. Any idea why this may be? One thing is that my neighbour's lilac tree was always purple. Did this affect my tree? Many thanks.
I have heard of this before, but it is a puzzle- no one seems to know why lilac flowers (rarely) change color.
One possibility is that it is a graft issue, but this is only true if it is a grafted plant:

I purchased and planted a Sensation Lilac shrub, but thought it was a lilac tree, which is what I wanted. Can a lilac shrub be pruned to be shaped more like a tree? I wanted to plant a memorial flower garden around base of the tree.

We have a Korean Lilac Tree (grafted onto a different trunk--we live in Canada). Over the past 14 years, I think we haven't taken enough off when we pruned, and one or two years we didn't prune it. The result is that it is getting too big--it's slowing encroaching on our deck space. There are only leaves on surface of the tree -- like leaves only come on the newer growth each year, so if we trim too much, there will be no leaves (which is part of the reason we haven't pruned it more heavily over the years). So my question is, can we do something to get the size back under control or is it too late? If we do a severe pruning, will the leaves come back this summer? If necessary, we could do the severe pruning in the fall (thus forfeiting blooms for the next year)--we just really need to reduce it's size -- or replace it :( Any advice you have is greatly appreciated! Thank you.
You can do pruning, but only remove 1/3 of your shrub at any time.
Prune right after blooming.
Remove up to 1/3 of a branch to shape the shrub.
You can remove 1 or 2 of the older branches down to the base of the shrub to encourage new growth.
If branches are rubbing or are damaged, remove those.

My lilac blooms all turned brown. What is causing that?
This could be lilac bacterial blight. Please see the following articles for advice:
