I live in zone 8b and have several lantanas that die back every winter. My friend who lives 2 roads over also has several in her yard which never die back. What would be the cause of this? Is there anything I can do to keep them from dying back?
Lantana is hardy in zones 9 and 10 so you are just on the edge of hardiness. For someone two roads over to not lose her lantana in winter I would suspect is because of the lantana variety or cultivar that she grows. Some are hardier than others. Inquire at the nursery which ones would likely continue blooming during the winter.

I have read an article stating that Lantanas are toxic and a danger to small animals. Should be avoided in children play areas. Your article is very detailed but says nothing of the toxicity of Lantanas. I'm confused. Please clarify.
Yes, they are poisonous to humans, children, and animals. Here is more:

I like the new red colored variety but what is a bright hearty variety
There are so many varieties, too numerous to mention, but here are some eye-catching varieties. Lantana 'Radiation' is an orange and red variety. 'Landmark Citrus' is tangerine and yellow. 'Athens Rose' is pink, magenta, rose, and yellow. 'Lucky Lavender' is lavender and yellow.

I don't have an unheated basement, and my garage will definitely reach well below freezing temperatures. Can I still find a way to keep my lantana alive during the winter?

If the lantana berries are not ripe when picked will they be useful? Can they produce a lantana plant? Or do the berries have to stay on the plant until they ripen before picking to produce a plant?
The berries need to turn dark before picking. Also, the berries are poisonous so take care when handling. Plants that produce berries usually decline in flowering and it's recommended to cut them back to increase bloom.
Lantana hybrids don't come true from seed so if you plant the berries, you likely won't get a plant like the parent. Many of the new hybrids are sterile and don't produce seed.
