My Irish moss is shooting out tall pieces in the middle of the patch. I can pull it out in clumps, which are bare underneath. I've grown it for years, and have never had it happen until last year, and now this. I live in zone 6. This occurs around mid-July. The area gets sun until noon, then is shaded. I'm not sure what causes this, is it normal? Thanks, Kristine
It's difficult to say from just your description. It could be a seed head that is forming.
If if is not rooted though, it's possible it is another plant or weed pushing through the moss.
From my experience, Irish Moss can die off for unknown reasons, even after being established for several years. The root structure is shallow and can be damaged easily.

I ordered the Irish moss from Tn Nursery in Tennessee without checking reviews...HUGE mistake. I called first to make sure it was living and green, not dormant. They said it was beautiful but when I received it...this is what it looked like. Is this even Irish moss? They gave me the run around about it when I called and sent emails, so it's just a lesson learned for me. What is your opinion?
It may look dead, but it is very much alive. You can repropagate that into quite a bit of moss. Keep it moist, and you will start to see life spring out of no where.
This article will help you to get this back to life, and propagated: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/foliage/moss/growing-moss-indoors.htm
My Irish moss has a weedcloverish plant growing out of it, actually taking over. Is there a weed killer I can use that won't hurt the Irish moss?
My research showed that any product containing glyphosate (systemic herbicide) should work without harming the moss. That is because moss doesn't have a vascular system of roots, but gets its moisture and nutrients from the air. Systemic herbicides work through the vascular system of plants.

I want to cover a zen garden area and between stepping stones with Irish Moss, approximately 300 square feet. Do I have to purchase Plugs from flats or small containers or is planting with seed very successful? thanks, Wayne
Moss does not make seeds. They make spores, much like a mushroom! With this being said, moss spore slurry is the fastest, most effective, way to spread it.
