Our Helleri Hollys are about 35 years old. We live in central NC. Some of the leaves are turning brown. Is the plant dying or will the leaves grow back in the spring. Some of the plants have died. Should they be cut back? they are about 3 to 4 ft. tall.
This is usually a sign of infection. You can help this by adding both dolomitic lime, and wettable sulfur to the soil. This will kill off any infection, and condition the soil back to where it needs to be. You can cut out any affected growth about a day after the first treatment.
my weeping yaupon holly as been hedge-trimmed by my yardmen into a rather ugly shape. There is little loose interest left to the tree and it is also too large now for the location. I would like to restore it is natural beauty and keep it smaller. It also has a couple 4-6 in diameter upright stalks in the middle which I don't know how to approach. Also, should I consider a radical prune of all branch ends which would thus remove most all leaves, leaving the tree about 10ft high? Is there any guidance or a site you can recommend which would show a proper way to rather severely trim back the holly to encourage a more natural loose growth and also downsize it? I have searched everywhere to no avail. Thank you for any help you can lend! sally james winter park florida
Little pruning is generally necessary to this shrub. Multiple branches leads to its strong structure. If you could include images we could be more specific on pruning.
I live in middle GA, zone 8, and need to plant 19 hollies, which will be in mostly shade during the day. What would be the best for me to purchase. Thanks for helping me. Linda Shay
You are in luck! Most Holly plants will do well in shade with the exception of the inkberry. Any one that you choose should do fine there.
Hi For privacy reasons I want to screen a roof garden that has a glass boundary from my neighbours and I would like to plant a Red Robin hedge in troughs. Ideally, I would like the hedge to grow to approx. 6ft high. Does Red Robin hedge grow well containers? If it is what size container should I use, and how far should it be from the glass wall? I would appreciate any advice that you can offer. Thank you Anne
If you are referring to the Holly that is named Robin Red, then it can be grown in container. You will need at least ten to fifteen gallons of soil per plant, so containers of that size will be appropriate. As long as you do not let them dry out completely, then they will do fine in this application. They can be as close to the glass as you need... This will not hurt them. We have had a summer drought and a very cold and windy winter. Most of the leaves on my holly tree fell after a very cold and dry spell. It was green one day and the next day most of the leaves had fallen off. It now looks very much like a "Charlie Brown Christmas tree. The bare branches look to me like there a buds on them. I really like this tree but have no idea as to what I need to do. I do not have a way to upload pictures, but would really appreciate any suggestions you may have. The tree was planted about 2 years ago and made it just fine through the previous winters. As you can probably tell I do not have much gardening experience.
It does sound like the quick change along with dry roots has led to this. I would prune back pretty drastically, and keep the soil slightly moist until it recovers. It should soon shoot up new growth as it start to recover from the shock.
My hollys are only like 3 years old and are dead. How should they be planted, etc?

Assuming that the brown leaves that showed up over the winter here in NJ is “leaf scorch”, is the tree deD or will it drop the leaves and grow new? It was perfectly healthy in the fall. Also other trees in my area were affected. Thank you.
