A friend just gave us 2 young holly saplings about 4" tall. Since they have shown no flowers or fruits as yet is there a way to determine their sex? I know if they are of the same sex there will never be any berries.

We're buying a large female holly. It's busting our budget. I understand that the female requires a male in order to have berries. Will a small, younger male version of the same tree suffice?
Thanks for the help!
Yes, that would be sufficient.

My son mowed over one of my holly bushes, leaving about three 6" roots. I trimmed them close to the ground but only one root is bearing leaves?
They are tolerant of being cut back severely. In fact, a mature holly can generally be cut to the ground and will regrow vigorously from its roots.

They will, actually, adapt to almost any amount of light. They will appreciate some shade, but they will grow just fine without it, as well.
Some types will be more tolerant of broader conditions, but most adapt to just about anything.

I want to dry out it's roots, and maybe change the pot to get better drainage But I am looking for advice on how or what to do. I am thinking I need some root fungus added to the water to expand the tiny roots, maybe then they would not get so water logged from a little watering, maybe then they might actually soak up the water with the nutrients. But is that the best way to go? should I water it again with the fungus, or do something to dry it out first?
Can you recommend a good soil that drains real well? I thought I purchased good drainage soil to start with.
Mycorrhizal fungus inoculation won't be enough to improve drainage and reduce standing water. Consider repotting with a better draining soil. You can inoculate the new soil with beneficial soil biology at that time.
Will the English holy grow in South Africa. And where can we buy one?
There are heavy webs on all my holly trees with strange looking slender "pods" hanging from the webbing. What are these and how do I get rid of them?
