Holly bushes were damaged during the winter. Brown leaves. How far down can I trim them and can I do it now (April)? The brown leaves go far down to the main stem. The bushes are about 12 years old. I've trimmed them gently every year. They look bad.

You can prune back the branches to the live growth (green tissue), but you should wait until after the last frost date. Call your local Extension Service https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/extension-search/
for information on that date.
My bushes are about 4 years old and always been very healthy with a lot of berries, but in the last few days all the leaves on the tops of the bushes are turning brown. What can I do and what is causing this? Please help.
There are a few things that can cause this, with holly scorch being the most common. This usually happens when the weather changes too quickly. The plant will normally recover from this on its own. Are you seeing any other symptoms? That will help us pinpoint it better.
The leaves are turning brown and are falling off. I don't remember this happening before. Is it dying?

You've had a very hard winter, and it's quite possible your holly is suffering from this. Wait until spring is well underway, to see if there are signs of new growth. You can then cut dead growth back to where it is starting new leaves, or showing green tissue under the bark.
My holly bushes have gotten quite leggy. Not sure what variety type they are, but when there are berries, they are red. Best time to prune is in winter, but is it too late, early spring, to do it now?
You can prune now, but if you do, you will likely not get berries this year. It doesn't hurt the plant, but as most people like to get the berries, they avoid pruning at this time.
How do I take cuttings from Holly and when is the best time to do this? Thank you.

Leaves on hollies turned yellow and are dropping off. If I use organic garden lime pellets, will this help?
If you have had a lot of rain and the drainage in the area is not good, it can cause problems with leaves. Is the ground swampy? If the ground stays wet, the roots can't 'breathe' and falling leaves or yellowing would be a sign of this. Too much water causes iron chlorosis. This article will help you fix the problem: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/holly/holly-yellow-leaves.htm
We have a coal dust type covering on our holly bush and 2 bay tree leaves this year. Can you please tell me what it is and how to treat it? Thank you.
It sounds like sooty mold, which is a symptom of several kinds of pests that can attack hollies. I recommend treating the plants with neem oil. This will kill any pests on the plant and treat the sooty mold as well. This article will help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/problems/pests/neem-oil-uses.htm
