I have an ongoing fight going with some woolly aphids. They're seriously damaging my gardenia bush. I have the insects mostly under control with an insecticidal soap, but the sooty leaves are unsightly and hindering growth. . . not to mention giving these bugs places to hide. How far back can I prune this gardenia without killing it? There's been new growth on the branches, but I am unsure as to how much of the damaged older growth can be cut.
You can cut back up to a 1/3 of the plant in a season. I would suggest trying neem oil on the plant. We have found it to be very effective on aphids and it will also work to combat the sooty mold. The leaves on my outdoor gardenia are turning black.
It sounds like it may have sooty mold. This article will help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/disease/how-to-get-rid-of-sooty-mold.htm
I live in southwest Florida where we have a lot of humidity and sun. I had a new house built and I planted gardenia bushes along the north wall. It gets sun but not all day. My bushes are very stalky- not many leaves. I had a gardenia before at my other house and they were full of leaves, very bushy and grew quite well. I fertilize and water the same. What can I do to improve my bushes? Do I need to cut them back?
Yes, cutting them back may be in order. The following article should be of some help to you: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/gardenia/when-to-prune-a-gardenia.htm
Will the cuttings from when you cut back a gardenia bush root? Also, I think I've waited too long to prune. Should I wait it out till the fall or go ahead and prune now? I would hate to miss all those beautiful blooms.
I would wait until after the blooms fade to prune. You can root the cuttings. Here is more information on that:

What time of year is best to plant a gardenia bush?
Spring is the best time to plant them. This article will also help you:

The recent cold experienced in the Houston area has caused brown leaves on our Gardenia. Can we prune it back now, and if so, how much can be pruned? If not now, do we wait until summer is over?
I would wait until spring to cut back the plant. It will help protect the new growth, just in case another freeze occurs. Just to let you know, the cold has probably destroyed the blooms for this year, so even if you wait until fall to prune, the plant will probably not bloom this year. It is the first of March here in southwest central Florida, and my potted dwarf gardenias look very healthy and have many small buds. I haven't fertilized the plants in at least two months. My concern is that the small buds (which have been on the plants for about a month now) don't seem to want to grow and open. Am I just being impatient, or do I need to try some azalea fertilizer? They also get morning sun and afternoon shade. Do they need more sun?
