Will calla lilies grow outside in Phoenix, AZ? I have a location that is sunny in morning and shady in the afternoon. I have a beautiful plant and would like to plant it outside. Thank you.
It looks like Phoenix is zone 9, so your calla lily should be fine planted outside year round.
When the bloom is spent on my calla lily, can I clip it off (deadhead)?
I have planted several calla lilies that were in bloom when I planted them. How long will these blooms last? I need them for a garden wedding next month.
This varies depending on location, temps, soil, etc. Most will bloom anywhere from 3-6 weeks with adequate care. I planted my potted calla lilies in a flower bed but some of the flower stems are laying flat. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do?
Make sure the plants are getting plenty of sun. If a plant doesn’t get enough of its required light then it develops weak, elongated stem that tends to flop over. Another factor is too much nitrogen, which will produce weak elongated stems and leaves. My calla lily was out in my sun porch and it got quite cold last night here. I forgot to bring it in and found it wilted today. What can I do to bring it back?
This article should help with that: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/environmental/tips-for-saving-cold-damaged-plants.htm Also, check the bulb and ensure that it is still firm. If it's soft or mushy, the plant is no longer good and must be tossed.
I am a VERY new gardener. I planted a small garden of irises and a few species of lilies. I cut my calla lily plant in half with a knife to separate. The cut went through the bulb. Will my plant die? What is the proper way to separate a plant like this?
It should be ok, as long as there is still some root and plant attached the bulb (rhizome) should be fine. Just replant and take care of as usual. With calla lilies, as with iris, you simply separate the rhizomes and replant. Big clumps may be more difficult to pull apart, so cutting with a knife or spade is sometimes necessary. Oftentimes, the bulbous parts are cut but will still grow.
How do I dig up a calla lily without hurting the bulbs? Didn't flower much last year, maybe the bulbs are too deep.
They may simply need more phosphorus in the soil, which promotes blooming. Then replant them at the appropriate depth.
