I am new to bulb gardening. I have gladiolus and lilies (along with other bulb flowers) in my garden. They only bloomed once this year. Is that typical? Or is there something I need to do to help them bloom more - like when you deadhead roses and other flowers to assist them in producing more flowers. Please help!
gladiolas only bloom once a year and they dont multiply like bluebells and daffodils leave them alone till the stems go brown dont cut them off as this is their food source for next year.
I have 50 grape hyacinth bulbs and 25 trumpet daffodil bulbs I planned on planting together. When is the best time for my climate? What is the best soil conditioner to add to sandy soil for these bulbs? Thanks.
If it gets cold enough where you live to chill them in the ground, you can plant them now. But, if it does not get cold enough for them to get the chill time they need to flower, you will need to pre-chill them and plant them after they are pre-chilled. You are right on the border of where people can plant directly in the ground and where people need to pre-chill. If you see other people growing these bulbs frequently in your area, then you should be fine and can plant now. But, if they are an unusual sight where you live, this would be an indicator that you need to pre-chill.
I planted bulbs 2 or 3 years ago and they are working their to top of ground. What has caused this?
They likely are coming to the soil surface due to crowding.
You can divide the bulbs and settle them back into the ground.

When I plant my bulbs, can I use newspaper as a mulch? Will the paper block the bulbs from blooming?
Yes, you would be better using a different mulch around bulbs.

When is the right time to separate bulbs?
It really depends on the bulb, but generally the spring blooming types are best lifted and divided in fall once the foliage has died back (in warmer zones, they may even require chilling) while other types can be divided in spring. I live in Sacramento Zone 9, should I dig up my Canna and Calla Lily bulbs during winter? What month should I dig bulbs up and when should I replant the bulbs in the spring?
Both your Canna and Calla Lily bulbs can overwinter outdoors in your zone.
Keep in mind that if they are needing to be divided or controlled from outgrowing a space it is best to lift them in the fall and make these divisions.
In warm zones they can be planted at any time in the spring.

I know it's definitely not an optimal time to plant summer perennials in fall. But I'm afraid my bulbs just won't make it out of soil much longer. I live in zone 7 and I mostly have gladiolus and Liatris sitting around. I know both glads and Liatris can overwinter where I live, but I haven't planted them yet and was wondering if I should?
I would go ahead and plant the Liatris bulbs, but store the Gladiola corms until spring.
