Original new plants planted early spring 2019. 13 died as above. We replaced this spring with new bare root plants. The same has happened but some are plants that have been in 2 years. Sandy soil but kept watered, and all plants watered the same

Certified ExpertA.Possibly, they were overwatered. Saturated soils allow for infections to take over. Until the infection is stopped, it will likely keep happening, unfortunately.

Certified ExpertA.You can prune now before new growth starts. Beech hedges respond well to hard pruning, so you can cut back quite a bit—up to two-thirds if needed. It’s better to tackle one side at a time, leaving the other to help keep the plant healthy and reduce shock. If you prune in February, new leaves should start coming in by May, especially in Ireland’s climate. Just make sure to feed and water the hedge well afterward to encourage strong regrowth.
