You can prune now before new growth starts. Beech hedges respond well to hard pruning, so you can cut back quite a bit—up to two-thirds if needed. It’s better to tackle one side at a time, leaving the other to help keep the plant healthy and reduce shock. If you prune in February, new leaves should start coming in by May, especially in Ireland’s climate. Just make sure to feed and water the hedge well afterward to encourage strong regrowth.
