Q.Sycamore Tree

Zone North Richland Hills, Texas 76182 | Mpfortney added on October 22, 2016 | Answered

I had 2 sycamore trees cut down 3-4 yrs ago. The stumps were ground down, but not totally removed. A tree started to grow back from one of the stumps. It is 12-13 ft tall. The leaves either die right away or never fully develop. What can I do?

I am not sure what is wrong with the leaves, but it is probably either a disease or a nutrient deficiency. Anthracnose disease can kill leaves soon after they emerge in spring. A disease called canker stain (Ceratocystis) can cause small leaves and poor leaf development in sycamores. Zinc deficiency can also cause small and misshapen leaves. Consulting an arborist or extension agent may be the best option to find out what is wrong.
