Q.Small holes about the size of a nickel in my yard

Zone Chesterfield VA 23237 | kathy.holt added on April 14, 2016 | Answered

There are several small holes in my yard. Never seen them before. They’re about as big around as a nickel or so, not a mound of dirt, just a hole. We have 2 dogs and we have not seen any creatures. I am in Richmond, VA if that detail helps. We have 2 pear and 1 peach tree but nothing is producing yet. What is it? I am worried, as they look just like the picture on your website.

This could be birds, earthworms, insects, or solitary bees.

Small snakes can also be the culprit.

I would contact your local County Extension Office for a list of insects or animals that are common to your area.

Here is a link to help you locate your closest office.
