Q.Should I have covered my Cannas with mulch in winter ? (zone 7)

Zone 30144 | Ola Fratczak added on June 8, 2018 | Answered

Hello, I cut my cannas 3 inches above the ground in the fall of last year, assuming that I am suppose to get rid of all the old dry foliage. It did not come back this year. Is there hope that this plant is not lost ? I live in a zone 7 so they should have been ok. also… my two neighbors still have theirs, beautiful big cannas they had for years. Why did only mine die when we had the same hard winter. Was I suppose to cover the plant with mulch ? would that help ?

Some cannas are cold hardy, and some are not. Are you certain that you have the same variety as those around you? Sometimes it is best to leave the dead growth until spring, just to give it some extra protection through the winter. Again, it can come down to the type you have purchased. Mulch will, definitely, help too.
