It is best to prune when the tree is still dormant, in late winter. Also, never remove more than 25 to 30 percent of a tree or shrub at one time. I'm sure the tree is in shock. Keep it well watered and follow its normal care instructions and it may recover in time. A weakened tree is also more susceptible to insects and disease so watch for those. Here is more:
