how do the roots grow on a rose bush

I'm not sure what you are asking but I'll take a guess. Rose roots spread out more than they go down. When transplanting, a deep dig isn't necessary but try to cut a wide 24 inch diameter circle around the plant. Use your shovel to reach under the rose one shovel-length deep.
