Q.Right soil…

Hadidje added on March 2, 2011 | Answered

I want to grow cilantro at home. I have patios that seem to be great for that.
I was in the store yesterday and there are at least 4 types of soil to choose from.
Which is the right one?
Thanks so much for your help.

There is no real easy answer to that, and you are right that there are many soil choices.

At a basic level you want a potting soil. This will have lots of organic material in it and will not compact when in the container.

Beyond this are more personal choices. There are potting soils with chemical fertilizers already in them (which are normally just labeled as potting soil). There are organic potting soils, that have composted manure and compost added to them for the nutrients. There is seed starting potting soil, that has little to no nutrients in it so as not to burn the roots of small seedlings. Seed starting potting soil is not what you need here, so you can either choose a regular potting soil or an organic potting soil.

There will be other specialty potting soils too, like ones for orchids or african violets, but they will be clearly marked and should not be an issue.
